So, You Have Type 2 Diabetes – Now What?

We know how overwhelming it can be being told you have Diabetes. So what’s the next step? While diabetes can be a serious disease, there is so much you CAN do to manage it in a healthy way. The good news is that you don’t have to do it alone, our Dietitians are here to help!

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a complex condition which can affect the whole body. It happens when your body can’t maintain healthy levels of glucose in the blood. Glucose is a form of sugar which is the main source of energy for our bodies, but if there are unhealthy levels of glucose in the blood this can lead to complications both short term and long term.

Now, we know it can be confusing to try and understand all the science behind what is going on, but thankfully our Dietitians work with Diabetes all the time and are skilled at translating your condition and the information you need to know into easy to understand and practical information for you!

3 things to consider with diabetes:

  • Diabetes requires daily care and management so getting on top of it early can make for an easier transition to living with diabetes.
  • You don’t have to be on a strict diet to manage your diabetes. Our dietitians tailor a plan that is suitable for you and your lifestyle. Many of our clients are shocked to learn this!
  • Without proper nutrition and lifestyle changes you risk increased progression of your diabetes and potential complications such as changes to your vision, depression and anxiety, decline in kidney health, weight challenges, delayed healing, increased risk of a heart attack or stroke and possible limb amputation if poorly managed.

Whilst it may seem annoying having to manage diabetes, it is very possible to still live a rich and enjoyable life. Learning about the condition and how you can best manage it will help make living with Diabetes as easy as possible. Managing Diabetes well will also help you avoid more serious long-term complications to your health.

So many of our clients are reaping the positive benefits of working with a Dietitian to manage their diet – typically finding big improvements in their weight, blood sugar levels and a reduction in Diabetes-related complications.
